The only bad thing that happened this weekend while I was adventuring in Sequoia was that a small tear which had developed in the Miata’s roof shortly after buying it got WAY worse suddenly. I had put the top up while hiking on Friday and then putting it down after my hike, I heard a bad sound as the roof folded back. I put it back up and this is what it looked like! I have looked and made sure something wasn’t impacting the top, especially from my recent roll bar installation. So it must have been improperly adjusted and then putting it up/down has torn it. It is stupid since my other Miata never had this problem, even with my antics of putting the top down in sub 0F weather (not recommended below 40F due to material damage risk). It did eventually develop a small pinhole in one of the corners but it never got worse or leaked. This is obviously a major fault and I will have to investigate why it happened before trying to install another roof.
My quick fix involved duct tape that I had on hand so that it wouldnt leak during the rain on the ride back to camp. It is a large hole though so every time I put the top up/down it needs to be retaped. So for now, top will not go back up ever again if I can help it. The car is parked indoors at home anyways so its not like I NEED a roof. I am just now committed to the top down life since I doubt I will ever bother replacing it.
Only upside is that I wanted a black top and at least this gives me an excuse if I get around to it.

I ordered Amazon’s finest, cheapest top. Works fine a couple months in. Im sure it's no Robbins, but that's more go fast parts

This is why the NA has a hard top and no soft top anything. I kinda love it, though I prefer topless. If I buy it I’ll get a bikini or something to toss in the trunk just incase I feel like swimming to cover the car a little if necessary .

I am concerned this is exactly why it ripped. The other Miata is a genuine robbins top (only receipt I got with that car). I would definitely not do a plastic window, would rather have no top at all for the weight savings at that point.

I think I will just leave the top as is and duct tape in the rare scenario that it actually rains. 99% of the time I wont see rain in California so it should be alright. I kind of want to consider removing it entirely to save weight but I do prefer having the option to park it places when needed. I might try some sort of repair method since I dont really care what it looks like anyways.
I’ve thought about just carrying a tarp around but that would require more effort than duct tape on the hole every time.

Some better tape and weather-proof sealant will make for a permanent fix. Apply to both sides. I had tons of holes/rips on my old soft top that were dealt with this way. Hell, I even replaced the window with a piec e of plexiglass, affixed with nothing more than sealant. Worked perfectly.
I wish I could ditch the soft top. It looks so good without it, and opens up a whole new area to m odding. Two 9" speakers would fit back there wonderfully...

I carry these ( Black Hole Patch ) for work as I occasionally am asked to patch tops, mainly Jeeps, and I’ve had good results with them.

Only time I drive is top down. No garage, so top is just there to keep weather out

I certainly could ditch the roof. Its not like it protects anything located in the car anyways. My main reason for shutting it is just the appearance of a locked car that would deter the opportunistic thief from rummaging through my cupholders or something. And perhaps keeping birds from shitting on my seats. I dont have to worry about random rain so I really could just remove it.
What tape did you use though? That would definitely be my solution for sure. I have some clear tape that is meant for sealing small holes and I have used it on the other car successfully but I definitely need the heavy duty stuff for this.

True, there really is no value in me having a “nice top” beyond not wanting to ever replace it again. So its certainly not a bad idea. I really do not need a top at all in Socal though. So my debate is more between remove entirely or fix this one in some ghetto way.

I wish I could recall the name.... It was like duct tape on steroids. About twice as thick, looked almost like a woven fabric and the sticking power was absolutely rediculous. Might have been gorilla tape...?

Flex-tape?
